It's Bird Friendly Chocolate Season! Hear me on the American Birding Podcast

Round robin of Bird-friendly certified foodstuffs from chocolate bars to maple syrup (via The Smithsonian’s Bird Friendly®certification and Vermont Audubon’s Bird-Friendly Sugarbush Management program, respectively). Hear (and read) about Smithsonian Bird Friendly®certified cocoa (as in CHOCOLATE you can now purchase) below!

It’s chocolate season and I spoke with Nate Swick of the American Birding Podcast this month about the growing availability of Bird Friendly® chocolates in the US market.

We talk about what certifies something as a “bird friendly” foodstuff, where and how bird-friendly cocoa is grown, who’s growing it, who’s certifying it and which chocolatiers are buying it to make chocolate products you can buy and eat.

We conclude by suggesting chocolate retailers to support in this indulgence for conservation! Go listen to it to find out how to support birds and your chocolate habit!

Concurrent to the podcast interview is the publication of my story about Bird Friendly® chocolate for January/February 2025 issue of BWD magazine, which is available to subscribers in print form or online behind a paywall (and here, shhh!).

Please enjoy chocolates from Dandelion, Fruition, Raaka and French Broad, all fine chocolate producers who purchase Bird Friendly® cocoa in support of migratory bird habitat in the tropics. Now you can, too!
